5-Reasons We Need to Stop Using the Term, "Canarsie Approach" for JFK 13L/R Procedures; New York JFK Rwys 13L/13R have a significant number of different approaches, all with tracks close to that of the original VOR approach - routed laterally over the CRI VOR. With this number of approaches (some of which do not even have the old CRI VOR on the chart) for clarity & safety we need to stop referring to approaches to Rwy 13L/13R as, "the Canarsie". Please help reduce confusion. Referring instead to the approach by the name the authority has approved; the title at the top of each approach chart.

ICYMI: Last week, I posted an article on my Forbes column to talk about the Modular Open Systems Approach (#MOSA), which is now required by law for very #DoD major defense acquisition program. So, if you expect to work on US #military #rotorcraft development efforts in the future, you should read this. In addition, the NATO Next Generation Rotorcraft Capability (#NGRC) program will require MOSA, and commercial aircraft efforts will likely all look at modular and open systems approaches. In the last #IFASD2024, I saw a lot of work on geometric nonlinearities in aeroelasticity. This reminded me of 15 years ago when I started my PhD on "Nonlinear Aeroelastic Analysis of Joined-Wing Configurations." Boeing appears to have come up with a solution for incompetent or ineffective supervisors: Video camera’s on the ceilings of offices with AI in the background (surveillance) reporting non conforming situations (undefined AI rules) to someone in management (who will then presumably make decisions based on who knows what)

The topic: The terms "pilot" and "flightcrew", both of which are historically used to describe people onboard the aircraft, are used throughout existing airworthiness requirements. As these requirements are being applied to increasingly automated and autonomous aircraft that do not have onboard pilots or flightcrew, the question has arisen of how best to apply them to uncrewed aircraft. This panel will build on work that is being done on a whitepaper of the same topic, exploring safety intent, possible paths forward, and the potential implications for associated elements. Method Aeronautics Advances to Next Phase in DARPA's ANCILLARY Program, Pioneering VTOL Technologies for Unmanned Aircraft Falls Church, Virginia — April 30, 2024 The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) has announced that Method Aeronautics LLC has progressed to the next phase of the groundbreaking AdvaNced airCraft Infrastructure-Less Launch And RecoverY (ANCILLARY) program. This phase aims to further the design and test of an X-plane demonstrator of advanced propulsion and control architectures for Vertical Takeoff and Landing (VTOL) unmanned aircraft systems (UAS). Adding to Method's reputation as experts in long endurance fixed-wing aircraft design, with this milestone Method has emerged as a leader in vertical takeoff and landing technology for unmanned aircraft systems. Method's design brings a novel approach enabling efficient, robust VTOL capability for Group 3 UAS. Method sees this program as critical technology development to enable wider use of VTOL UAS by U.S. forces abroad, and is actively working to accelerate development beyond the scope of the award. For the ANCILLARY program Method is collaborating with two other industry standouts: Bechamo and SNC. Bechamo was founded in 2020 to provide flight control solutions, and to help aircraft makers create better and more controllable aircraft. Funded also by NASA Phase 1 and Phase 2 SBIRs, Bechamo is using AI and Optimization approaches to provide easier, safer aircraft flight controllers. SNC is proud to partner with Method and Bechamo as part of the DARPA ANCILLARY program. SNC’s long-history in enduring landing systems and aircraft modification and integration is enabling it to generate a state-of-the-art AI/ML landing solution with verifiable statistical safety checks to meet the demands of the ANCILLARY program and the modern warfighter.
